Conduct Roller Operations

Course overview

This assessment only pathway course covers the conducting roller operations in the civil construction industry.  It includes: planning and preparing; conducting machine pre-operational checks; selecting, removing and fitting attachments; operating and relocating the machine; and carrying out operator maintenance and clean up.

A Roller is a self- propelled or towed machine used for the primary purpose of compacting a variety of types of construction materials. It may be rubber tyred, smooth drum, padded drum or grid/open faced type that achieves compaction by static weight, kneading, vibration or impact.

This course is delivered in a face-to-face classroom environment and contains both theory and practical elements.

Classes start at 8am.

  • Interpret & apply roller operations documentation to ensure work activity compliance
  • Risk, hazard & environmental identification and implement control measures
  • Identify, obtain & implement traffic management signage
  • Select appropriate equipment & attachments for the task and check for faults
  • Obtain & interpret emergency procedures
  • Conduct pre-operational machine checks
  • Operate roller to achieve optimum output
  • Roller operating techniques
  • Remove & fit attachment
  • Select, test and use attachments in accordance with recommendations and design limits
  • Prepare and relocate grader
  • Move roller between worksites
  • Carry out machine operator maintenance
  • Conduct inspection & fault finding
  • Clear work area in accordance with environmental management plan
  • Process records

Entry requirements & Pre-requisites

Individuals wishing to undertake this course must:

  • Have a minimum of 40 hours experience operating a roller
  • Have basic communication, literacy, numeracy skills and understand and speak the English language that enables the safe performance of a roller.

Need to know
  • You will be required to undertake a LLN skills assessment prior to commencing the course.
  • You must provide, on the 1st day of training: some text
    • two (2) forms of identification, one (1) must include a photo, one (1) must include current
  • At the time of booking, you must disclose any medications or disability which may affect your learning or physical ability to conduct the safe operation of a roller
  • Wear comfortable and practical clothing and work boots. (safety boots preferred)
  • Tea & Coffee is provided.
  • Please arrive 10 minutes prior to the commencement of training.
  • Upon booking into the course, you will receive a copy of the Student Information Book detailing your rights and responsibilities including our complaints and appeals procedure, a copy is also available on our website.

Assessments

The participant is trained/instructed on each competency, the participant must then demonstrate the ability to perform each criterion and will be progressively assessed. Should the participant be deemed not competent, the student has a right to appeal the assessment decision and will be provided with the opportunity to either challenge the assessment or apply for re-assessment within a reasonable time frame. Students have the right to appeal if they are not satisfied with the outcome, according to your rights and responsibilities detailed in the student handbook. Further fees may be applicable for participants that require reassessment.

Recognition of prior learning (RPL) & Credit transfer

Licences & Certification

This course is Nationally Recognised Training and applicants deemed competent at the conclusion of the course will be provided with a Statement of Attainment and wallet sized competency card.
